Want real innovation? Stop starving your workers

Many bosses starve important projects in the belief that hunger for resources will force workers to improvise and innovate -- but that's a risky and often misguided gamble, write Teresa Amabile and Steve Kramer. While constraint can sometimes fuel creativity, it's usually best to give workers a clear and urgent goal, and the resources they need to attain it. "Intentionally strangling resources below a sufficient level, in a misguided effort to spur new thinking, will likely spawn only aborted attempts at innovation," Amabile and Kramer write.
