Durable goods and housing are up, but consumer confidence slides

An 8.1% jump in housing prices in January and a 5.7% increase in durable-goods orders in February provide additional evidence of a mending economy. The Conference Board's index of consumer sentiment, however, has fallen to a reading of 59.7, from 68 in February, as sequestration takes effect.
