Seeking a level playing field for retailers

Business owners such as Kurt Seelig, who owns Cardinal Camera, are advocating for legislation in Congress that would force online merchants to collect sales tax. The bill, known as the Marketplace Fairness Act of 2013, "puts us on a level playing field. A customer will come in and say. 'Hey, I want to buy this camera, but I don't want to pay the [sales] tax because I can buy it on Amazon.com for less,' " Seelig said. Cardinal Camera offers customers valuable services that online retailers do not, he says, and he can't afford to cut his prices to match tax-free online prices.
