Small luxury brands play catch-up in China

Italian luxury jeweler Damiani and other small luxury brands that were flourishing in Europe a decade ago are now struggling to win over consumers in China, competing against bigger rivals including Prada and Louis Vuitton that successfully grew in Asia in the years before the recession hit. Brand recognition is key both in China and with Asian tourists in Europe. "Asians abroad only buy brands they can recognize," said La Perla CEO Tim Brasher.
