Slow road to growth is fine by Wegmans

Wegmans Food Markets, lauded by industry experts as among the best-run grocery retailers, has no plans to speed up its schedule of store openings, the company says. "We're not afraid of growth. The reason we have grown slowly is that we want to make sure our people are fully prepared and trained to deliver on our model of incredible service," said Colleen Wegman, the chain's president. The rock-concert-like atmosphere of new store openings is attributed to the excitement generated by presentation, experience and word of mouth.
