Tax time could be problematic for the unemployed

Increasing unemployment could make tax time particularly tricky -- and painful -- this year. Taxes are not typically withheld from benefit checks, meaning some unemployed people could be facing tax bills come April 15. "Now the rule does change, a lot of people are aware of the fact maybe that it changes for 2009, but that's only for unemployment benefits received from Jan. 1, 2009, on. In that case the first $2,400 that they receive is tax-free," AICPA Vice President Thomas P. Ochsenschlager says.
