Denser, more efficient cities are the solution to urban sprawl

The world's cities are growing, and in less than 20 years are expected to eat up a swath of land that is more than twice the size of Texas, putting the globe under even more environmental strain, experts said at the Planet Under Pressure 2012 conference in London. Building densely and efficiently could be the answer, but that requires more planning and investment in public infrastructure, including land-use zoning, mass transit and building standards that encourage multiple space users. "If cities can develop in height rather than in width, that would be much more preferable and environmentally not as harmful," said Michail Fragkias of Arizona State University.
