TSMC chairman: Smartphones to first drive growth, then IoT

Smartphones and other mobile devices will provide the growth in the chip business in 2014 and 2015, according to Morris Chang, chairman and founder of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing. “I think the second quarter and the third quarter will be very good [quarters],” he said. “I’m optimistic about this year.” After mobile devices settle down into a more mature market, the Internet of Things will be the next big growth opportunity for the semiconductor industry, Chang predicts.
