Pentagon to purchase more surveillance balloons for Afghanistan

The Pentagon plans to buy another six helium-filled tethered balloons equipped with cameras to watch over Kandahar Airfield in Afghanistan. The aerostats, which are tied to the ground, are part of the military's Persistent Ground Surveillance System, and they represent a less-expensive alternative to high-flying drones.
