Semiconductor Manufacturing International last year grew its annual revenue by 21.6% to $2.07 billion, while net profit soared to $173 million from 2012's $22.8 million. The question for the leading Chinese foundry is whether it can keep up with the technical prowess of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing, Junko Yoshida writes. CEO Tzu-Yin Chiu concedes that keeping up with TSMC may not be feasible, while adding, "I think we are narrowing our technology gap with other foundries. We are keeping pace with the industry and we are quite confident of the progress we’re making."
