USDA works with Ill. to boost summer meal programs

Participation is low in summer meal programs nationwide, and Illinois ranks 39th among the states with 11.2% of eligible students signed up for the meals, officials said. The U.S. Department of Agriculture is working with the state's board of education to increase the number of programs and recipients in Illinois. "Summer is the time of year children anywhere in the United States are most likely to go hungry," said Kevin Concannon, the USDA's undersecretary for food, nutrition and consumer services. "The major reason is school is out."
