Food prices may rise more than 3% in 2004

Strong demand for beef, despite a recent BSE scare, is leading a broader price increase for food, reports say. Soybean, wheat and corn prices also are rising, shrinking profits for food manufacturers who may have to pass the higher costs on to consumers. "The critical thing is going to be the outcome of this year's harvest," an analyst said.
