This New York Times editorial argues that although the American Petroleum Institute calls hydraulic fracturing a "safe and well-understood technology" for harvesting natural gas, the Environmental Protection Agency should conduct a speedy, "comprehensive and transparent" evaluation of the process. The editorial also supports passage of the DeGette-Hinchey bill in the House, which would call for federal oversight of fracking under the Safe Drinking Water Act and require the industry to reveal the chemicals it uses.
