Government pensions are worse off than many realize

Government pension funds might be deeper in the red than administrators realize, according to some experts. The General Accounting Standards Board is looking at this issue and might require governments to increase their funding of the plans. One separate study proposed the average funding level of state public pension plans maintain funding at 80%, compared with 65% in 2009. Most state treasurers and managers objected to the proposal.
