ICAO to weigh proposal for in-flight streaming of safety data

European aviation regulators plan to call this week for in-flight streaming of safety data on commercial airline flights. EU leaders will make their presentation in Montreal, where the U.N.'s International Civil Aviation Organization begins a meeting on Monday. Spurred by the unsolved crash of an Air France jet last year off the coast of Brazil, France and other European nations have begun seriously studying the feasibility of using satellites to stream key data to land-based computers. "Experts agree that some small enhancements to the maintenance messages already transmitted by many commercial airliners could greatly aid accident investigators," says Bill Voss of the Flight Safety Foundation. EU leaders will make their presentation in Montreal, where the U.N.'s International Civil Aviation Organization begins a meeting on Monday, and the FAA reportedly has agreed to back the European position.
