House budget chairman says military budget doesn't match strategy

The Pentagon's cuts to defense are being driven by budget concerns, not military strategy, says Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wis., head of the House Budget Committee. "We don't think the generals are giving us their true advice," Ryan this week told a forum sponsored by the National Journal magazine. "We don't think the generals believe that their budget is really the right budget." Stated military strategy has the U.S. expanding in the Pacific, and the defense budget doesn't support an expanded Air Force and Navy to do that, Ryan argues.
