Republican presidential candidates have been trying to demonstrate their pro-Israel credentials in an attempt to appeal to both Christian and Jewish voters, writes Ira M. Sheskin, a geography professor at the University of Miami, in this opinion piece. While Jewish citizens make up just 2% of the U.S. population, they vote in higher numbers than many other groups, and many live in key electoral states such as New York, Pennsylvania and Florida, data show. "The 10 states with the highest Jewish population account for 244 electoral votes, with 270 needed for victory," he notes.
