You can make firing someone a less unpleasant experience by making them aware of performance problems earlier on, writes Jim Keenan. Hold coaching sessions with poor-performing salespeople, and if they don't improve, hold them responsible for their shortcomings, he recommends. In this manner you can come to a mutual understanding that it's time to part ways.
