D.C. grocery deal appears likely

Rank-and-file employees at Safeway and Giant Food in the Washington, D.C., and Baltimore regions are meeting today to vote on a proposal for a new labor contract that would avoid a strike. Union leaders and an outside food expert seemed optimistic the workers would ratify the agreement. If it is voted down, they would then vote on whether or not to strike.
