Microlenders take a macro view

Originally set up to help women or minority business owners in economically disadvantaged communities, microlenders today are spreading their money further, The Wall Street Journal reports. The Utah Microenterprise Loan Fund, for instance, doubled its lending to $1.2 million last year, with much of that going to entrepreneurs "that perhaps a year ago could have gotten a bank loan," Executive Director Kathy Ricci says.
