Support grows for U.S. health coverage mandate

An insurance industry proposal to mandate all Americans purchase health coverage is gaining support among legislators and business and consumer groups. Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus, D-Mont., said it would help the market function better and reduce premium costs. The Health Reform Dialogue coalition, which includes AHIP, AARP, AHA, Families USA and the Business Roundtable, also backs the idea of a mandate along with federal subsidies to help people pay for medical coverage.
