In dealing with bad news -- maybe a drop in profits or the emergence of a new competitor -- small-business owners must take initiative and focus on what they can do. "The best reaction, of course, is to step up to the plate," said investment banker and author Scott Singer. "You stop worrying about how you got where you are right now, you acknowledge what happened, and you start thinking about what you are going to do about it."
