Laid-off Caterpillar workers have options for retraining

Some laid-off workers from Caterpillar have been able to turn to the Workforce Development Network in Illinois, which offers special funds to help retrain people who lose their jobs. However, only a fraction of those eligible for the program take advantage of it, while others try unsuccessfully to get tuition assistance that is unavailable because of lack of funding. "We see about 20 to 25% of the overall figure of those who have lost jobs from Caterpillar, who come in here to seek retraining," said Bruce Marsten, Workforce Development division manager.
