The shortage of veterinarians for small-scale livestock producers is so evident in Orangeburg, S.C., that the state is looking to apply for federal assistance under the USDA's Veterinary Medicine Loan Repayment Program, according to the state veterinarian. However, the vet noted that the region may not be eligible for the program because the demand for food-animal veterinary services may not be significant enough to be considered critical.
