Republicans ask Democrats to help avoid government shutdown

Unable to agree with other Republicans, House GOP leaders have started reaching out to moderate Democrats to head off a shutdown of the U.S. government. Rep. Heath Shuler, D-N.C., said House Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., met with several conservative Democrats to see whether there is a chance of compromising on several fiscal issues, including an extension of the government's spending authority.
