How standards-based education is being used in some Maine schools

Several Maine schools are using standards-based education, in which the focus is on achieving basic goals rather than letter grades or grade levels. High-school math teacher Megan Childs combines classroom lectures with online instruction on students' laptops to individualize lessons and allow students to learn at their own pace. Childs says the flexible approach has particular benefits for a student who is gifted and another who has missed school for an extended period because of illness.
