How standards-based education is being used in some Maine schools

Several Maine schools are using standards-based education, in which the focus is on achieving basic goals rather than letter grades or grade levels. High-school math teacher Megan Childs combines classroom lectures with online instruction on students' laptops to individualize lessons and allow students to learn at their own pace. Marisa Penney, a biology teacher, says the approach allows her students to use projects, labs and other activities to demonstrate their knowledge of a subject before moving on.
