Republicans could raise tax issue ahead of elections

House Republicans are considering scheduling a pending battle over tax cuts before Election Day. GOP leaders want to extend Bush-era tax cuts and prevent the lapse of capital gains, stock dividend and estate tax provisions. An election-season tax fight would allow the party to underscore its commitment to lower taxes, leaders say.
