As workforce ages, defense contractors scramble for engineers

Faced with an aging workforce, stiff competition and strict hiring rules, the defense industry is seeing a shortage of engineers. Both Northrop Grumman and Lockheed Martin are facing mass retirements over the next five to 10 years, and the companies are ineligible to hire foreign engineers due to required security clearances. In response, companies are getting creative, sending tutors into elementary schools, offering tuition reimbursement and allowing more flexible schedules.
