Swedish scientist Peter Harryson has developed a new bridge design concept that centers on using composite materials. Harryson's model incorporates beams made of reinforced fiberglass and high-strength concrete reinforced with steel fibers to make a bridge deck. The new materials, combined with an efficient construction process, could make it possible to begin using the bridge just two weeks after construction begins. However, none of the materials in Harryson's model, which would cost twice as much as conventional materials, are currently used in bridge construction.
