A new design-build pilot program launched by the New Jersey Schools Development Authority is aimed at building schools more quickly and efficiently. With the design-build model, an architect partners with a contractor to design a building and jointly bid on the project. Observers note that the quick procurement process has the potential to reduce construction time by up to eight months. New Jersey plans to start construction on 27 school projects worth $1.2 billion this year. It will require all of the design-build projects to receive a LEED rating of at least silver.
