Federal investigators are looking into a near collision that occurred Saturday morning after a United Airlines 777 bound for Beijing came within 300 feet of a private aircraft shortly after takeoff from San Francisco International Airport. The pilots of the United jet were warned of the danger simultaneously by air traffic controllers and by their onboard collision avoidance system. The first officer slowed the plane's climb and leveled out, and both pilots reported seeing the underside of the smaller plane, an Aeronca 11AC, as it passed overhead. The flight continued to Beijing without incident, and United is "fully cooperating with the investigation," according to a spokeswoman.
