How should teachers approach homework?

Educators and authors in this blog post offer several ways teachers should address homework. In response to a question posed on English and social studies teacher Larry Ferlazzo's blog, author Cathy Vatterott suggests teachers treat homework as feedback, check for students' understanding before assigning practice homework and track completion, but not necessarily grading the work. One educator suggests making homework occasional and finding another way to describe "homework," which can carry a negative connotation for some students.
