Childbirth complications carry heavy social burden globally

In Malawi, the Freedom from Fistula Foundation is working to address the lack of social support that women and girls can suffer as well as treating the physical effects of the childbirth complication. Women treated with surgery are offered educational opportunities during three weeks of recovery at a clinic. "The surgery is absolutely necessary, but it's only the beginning of their recovery," University of North Carolina surgeon Jeffrey Wilkinson said.
