Maryland lawmakers stall state takeover of Baltimore schools

The Maryland General Assembly voted 30-17 in the Senate and 100-34 in the House Friday to place a one-year moratorium on state plans to take control of 11 failing Baltimore schools next year. Legislators appear to have the votes needed to override a possible veto by the governor, although state schools chief Nancy Grasmick said she would lobby hard to prevent such an override.
