RFID system could help eliminate sponges left behind

After testing surgical-sponge-detection RFID technology since 2005, Pennsylvania-based ClearCount Medical Solutions has introduced its system onto the market. The SmartSponge system has sponges containing RFID tags, a wand that reads the tags, and software that records how many sponges were used during a surgery -- and how many were removed.
