BP Exploration faces federal, state lawsuits over Alaska oil spills

The U.S. and Alaskan governments filed civil lawsuits this week against BP Exploration (Alaska) in regard to two 2006 oil spills at Prudhoe Bay on Alaska's North Slope. BP Exploration pleaded guilty two years ago to federal violations of the Clean Water Act and agreed to a $20 million fine; the latest federal suit asks that BP be forced to act to prevent future spills. Meanwhile, Alaska's lawsuit alleges violations of state environmental laws and loss of revenue.
