Flame-retardant chemicals found in high concentrations near coasts

A study looking at the nationwide presence of flame-retardant chemicals known as polybrominated diphenyl ethers found the chemicals in high concentrations in coastal environments in areas such as Southern California and Chicago. The chemicals, credited with saving hundreds of lives annually, have been linked to neurological and reproductive problems in animals.
