Parents, experts call for better guidelines on school nutrition

Congress must remove junk food from U.S. schools to rein in skyrocketing rates of childhood obesity, said leaders of the National Parent Teacher Association and the American Dietetic Association at a Senate hearing Tuesday. Sugary drinks and unhealthy snacks sold in school cafeterias and vending machines undermine school meals that follow the dietary guidelines, said Senate Agriculture Committee Chairman Tom Harkin, D-Iowa.
