Earthquake may trigger concrete code changes in Chile

Chile's newer buildings of three stories or more stood up fairly well to the magnitude 8.8 Feb. 27 earthquake, but concerned engineers may want the current building code to be tweaked to require confinement reinforcing steel for concrete members. Researchers are studying the quake damage with an eye on the effectiveness of the American Concrete Institute's ACI 318 code.
