Researchers develop drug-producing bacteria to target diseased areas

Scientists at the University of Maryland said they have engineered a strain of the E. coli bacterium to create a prototype that has the ability to produce and deliver drugs to specific diseased areas without harming normal tissues. They hope the technique could be used to treat cancer, gastrointestinal diseases and other illnesses, the lead researcher said.
