Banks continue shuttering branches

Banks and thrifts closed 2,267 branches in 2012, and the trend will continue, according to research firm SNL Financial. Mobile and online banking save money, banks say, and branches are expensive to operate. PNC Bank President William Demchak, for example, says each mobile check deposit saves the bank $3.88 compared with a teller window transaction. Some analysts say the closures will hit hard in small communities, where banks are often a center for socialization.
