Large desalination plant in Calif. to use reverse osmosis

A $1 billion desalination plant under construction in Carlsbad, Calif. -- the largest in the Western Hemisphere -- will use reverse osmosis technology developed in 1964 by San Diego-based General Atomics. The technology has spread steadily over the years, and when the Poseidon Resources plant opens in three years, it will be one of 8,200 such plants globally.
