Officials in Ga. counties promote use of alert system

Emergency officials in Richmond County, Ga., and surrounding counties are encouraging residents to enroll in a notification system that issues warnings via e-mail, text and phone. Many residents no longer react to older systems such as sirens or can't hear them, officials say. Emergency-management teams are reaching out to residents through civic and neighborhood-watch groups.
