The size and pitch of roofs determine the cost of roofing projects, but customers place importance on the aesthetic benefits of materials, according to Robert Berry, owner of DeKalb Roofing in Georgia. Metal roofs make homes look less suburban, while terra cotta tiles play a vital role in the style of Italian houses, says builder Monte Hewett. But it is the architectural shingle that is most in fashion now. "Most people choose that style now because of the aesthetics rather than the fact that the shingles last longer," Berry said.
