Sports is the key driver behind cost of TV content

Even as viewing audiences disperse across different services and platforms, sports programming has retained and built its importance as a fixture for media companies. Collectively, media firms have pledged an estimated $110 billion for the rights to air live sports events into the next decade. "This is an enormous business that people don't understand, and it's driving cable bills," said analyst David Bank of RBC Capital Markets.
