Cardiologists weigh in on SYMPLICITY, future of renal denervation

SYMPLICITY investigator and SCAI fellow Dr. Deepak Bhatt said he continues to be "cautiously optimistic" about the future of renal denervation after presenting evidence that there was no benefit seen in the trial. Bhatt noted the study looked at a single device in one group of patients and said a new approach might be needed: "I do think the field needs a little bit of a reboot." Still, he argued research should continue because there have been signals that suggest the approach could be effective. Similarly, SCAI fellow Dr. Michael Rinaldi suggested a route for future work: "This could suggest that we need better devices, which are more complete in their denervation and in a more targeted way."
