Deficits force layoffs and budget cuts at Detroit schools

Detroit Public Schools will lay off 900 teachers and 2,300 other employees by July 1 to alleviate a $78 million shortfall this year and a $91 million shortfall next year. Robert Moore, the district's senior deputy CEO, said that declining enrollments necessitated the move to "right-size" staff numbers.
