Zach, a 2-year-old Labrador retriever, was trained by the nonprofit Canine Companions for Independence to assist people with disabilities. He helps Virginia special-education teachers, who say his presence improves student behavior and self-esteem. "Dogs love you unconditionally," says Zach's owner, Penny Edwards, a high-school teacher and coach. "He doesn't see the students' disabilities or limitations. He sees the person."
