Study finds high readmission rates for Medicare patients

Up to one-fifth of Medicare patients are readmitted to the hospital within one month of discharge, costing the program an estimated $17 billion in 2004 alone, according to a claims analysis. Half of the patients who returned to the hospital apparently did so without first seeing a physician, and researchers said better follow-up care is needed.
